Some 65 million years ago, a piece of land broke away from Antarctica and drifted north. And so, the smallest and flattest of the continents was born. We know it as Australia, home of some of nature's most amazing sites and creatures!

Australia's remoteness from the rest of the world contributed to the evolution of some of it's most interesting natives - which are found nowhere else in the world. Funny looking creatures like the platypus, which seems to take at least some of its attributes from a duck and a beaver. And the koala which spends more than 80% of it's day sleeping!

While it may be best known for the sparkling Emerald City of Sydney and it's glorious harbor, it is also known for having the oldest rainforest (more than 110 million years), for being one of the oldest human civilizations on earth and for its impressively long coastline (more than double that of the contiguous United States).

Amazingly, Australia's small population (just over 19 million people) live on just under 3% of the land, as the vast majority of Australia is covered in the harsh Outback of shifting sand arid desert.
