Day 8 Sydney-Hunter Valley (175 kms)
Your self-drive exploration begins today when you pick up your Thrifty Medium Sedan at the Syndey City Depot and begin your drive to the Hunter Valley. The Hunter Valley is the oldest wine producing area in New South Wales, with the first vines being brought here in the 1820s. It is one of Australia's more scenic wine growing areas, with the Hunter River winding its way lazily through the grapevine clad hills. Visitors can indulge in great food to complement the area's world class wines, or float over the vineyards in a hot air balloon. Activities abound and wine beckons.
Day 9 Hunter Valley
Today is at leisure to explore all that the Hunter Valley has to offer. You may wish to visit some of the local wineries. Tyrells, Brokenwood, Wyndham and Rothbury Estates all produce premium quality table wines, and are in easy driving distance from your accommodation. There is also bushwalking, local arts and crafts, antiques and unique Hunter Valley cheese to taste.
Day 10 Hunter Valley-Taree (165 kms)
Take the scenic route along the Pacific Highway to Bulahdelah - the main entrance to the Myall Lakes, one of the largest coastal lake systems. Continue through Forster, where Wallis Lake meets the sea. You might want to stop to watch dolphins play in the shallows beneath the bridge. Pass through Tuncurry which means "plenty fish" in the Aboriginal Worimi language and on into Taree on the Manning River.
Day 11 Taree-Coffs Harbour (235 kms)
Try a scenic detour on your drive today and travel towards the coast through the historic river village of Gladstone. Continue through the holiday town of Hat Head and later South West Rocks. You may wish to stop and visit the ruins of Trial Bay Gaol, which dates back to the early settlement days. Continue on the Pacific Highway to Coffs Harbor.
Day 12 Coffs Harbour-Bryon Bay (240 kms)
On your drive today, you may wish to travel the coast road to Yamba, a popular surfing destination. Why not have lunch here (on your own) before you rejoin the coastal road at Maclean. Maclean is knows as "The Scottish Town in Australia" and a number of the street signs bear Gaelic translations. Continue through the resort town of Lennox Head and into Bryon Bay - "where the sun first hits the sand".
Day 13 Bryon Bay
Today you can explore Byron Bay and its surrounds at your leisure. Sample some of the local range of activities, from tandem hang-gliding and parachute jumps, to kayaking, surfing (or learning to surf), bike or horse-riding. The marine park at Julian Rocks, just off the main beach, is the meeting place of tropical and temperate currents, providing scuba divers and snorkellers with some amazing scenery. There is a great walking trail to the top of the Cape, with stunning coastal views, and the lighthouse is the spot to watch for whales. Don't forgo a visit to nearby Brunswick Heads and Byron's hinterland.
Day 14 Bryon Bay-Brisbane
Leaving Byron Bay, rejoin the Pacific Highway and travel via Murwillumbah. You might wan to stop at Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, where you can hand feed a fine collection of Australian parrots. Be sure to take the route off the Pacific Highway to the Gold Coast Highway and drive past the the beaches of Kirra, Burleigh Heads, Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise and Southport. For your final night in Australia, you'll stay in Lamington National Park. You might want to take the rainforest canopy walk later this afternoon.
Day 15 Brisbane-Depart
The day is at leisure - perhaps take a final drive along the Gold Coast beaches or explore part of Lamington National Park. Then, drive to Brisbane Airport where you drop your car off before boarding the overnight flight to Dubai.
