Day 5 Wed Cape Town-Oudtshoorn
We depart Cape Town this morning and drive to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. Our scenic drive along "Route 62" takes us past small towns and villages like Montagu and Barrydale. We'll make a lunch stop at the Country Pumpkin, where you can sample traditional South African dishes like Karoo lamb curries and the famous Cape Malay Bobotie (lunch on your own account.) Then, we'll continue on to Oudtshoorn for the night.
Day 6 Thu Oudtshoorn | Meals: B
Lots of fun awaits today. First stop is the Cango Wildlife Ranch, which is actually the oldest cheetah center in the world. There is time to interact with their hand-reared cheetah, learn about crocodiles and even meet their resident Bengal Tigers. Then it is on to Cango Caves, situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the Swartberg Mountains. The caves were discovered in 1780 and are still revealing secrets. Once thought to be only 1 kilometer in length, scientists have discovered the caves are over 5 kilometers and archaeological finds prove that humans were sheltered here more than 80,000 years ago. We'll stop for lunch filled with traditional South African treats before continuing to the Ostrich farm to learn more about these enigmatic creatures. If you are brave enough, you can try sitting -- or riding -- on one!
Day 7 Fri Oudtshoorn-Knysna | Meals: B
We travel via the Outeniqua Pass through George and into Knysna, one of South Africa's most stunning resort towns. First visit the Knysna Elephant Park, where you have an opportunity to get up close to these gentle giants. You can meet the elephants and even feed them, while learning about herd and their life here at the Elephant Park. Next up is a stop the the Birds of Eden, the world's largest free flight bird sanctuary. Walk the canopy walk from where you can see some of the almost 200 species of birds that inhabit this sanctuary. With its own indigenous forest, the sanctuary provides an environment as close to nature as possible for its more than 3500 residents.
