Day 4 WED Cape Town-Oudtshoorn | Meals: BLD
Leave Cape Town early this morning with a professional guide who will travel with you over the next four days as you explore the magnificent Garden Route. Your air-conditioned mini-bus travels along famous Route 62 to the pretty village of Barrydale for a short stop. Then it's on to Oudtshoorn, known as the "feather capital of the world" thanks to its large ostrich industry. And our first stop in Oudtshoorn is at an ostrich farm. The ostrich is the world's largest bird and it lays the largest egg. Did you know that an ostrich egg is the equivalent of 24 chicken eggs? Continue on to your hotel in Oudtshoorn for the night.
Day 5 THU Oudtshoorn-Knysna | Meals: B
The morning begins with a visit to the Cango Caves. This underground wonder's chambers are filled with massive stalactites, stalagmites and helictites. The caves were the first to be protected by enviornmental legislation and the first attraction in South Africa to employ a full time guide. The caves hold many secrets yet to be solved. For example, there is an ancient engraving in a completely dark area - how did the artist render the engraving with no light? After your visit, your drive takes you via the spectacular Outeniqua Pass to the town of George and then into Knysna in the heart of the Garden Route. The afternoon is at leisure so you can explore the art galleries and shops.
Day 6 FRI Knysna | Meals: BL
A wonderful day awaits in this popular resort town. Begin with a cruise on the Knysna Lagoon from which you'll have excellent view of the Knysna Heads, massive sandstone towers that guard the entrance of the lagoon from the sea. The lagoon is actually an estuary and is popular for water sports. Spend time in the Featherbed Nature Reserve, a privately owned nature Reserve which is also a South African Heritage site. You can walk along the reserves paths through Milkwood forests and along paths dotted with fynbos. If you are lucky, you might also spot the Black African Oyster Catcher, one of the rarest coastal birds in South Africa. Enjoy lunch before returning to your hotel. The rest of the day is on your own to enjoy the town.
Day 7 SAT Knysna-Port Elizabeth-Kariega Game Reserve | Meals: BLD
Your drive takes you through Tsitsikamma Forest and into Port Elizabeth from where you continue by road to Kariega Private Game Reserve - a malaria free Big 5 Game viewing area in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Wild cat, lynx, hyena, jackal, genet, bushpig, warthog, baboon, monkey, honey badger and porcupine are some of our residents, to mention just a few.
